When I was a teenager, my mother sold Avon in her spare time. This was great for us girls, because she always had samples around - cologne packets, tiny tubes of lipstick, and sometimes jewelry. Back then, I had never heard of breast cancer and nobody mentioned issues like domestic violence. In the 1960's, Avon had just been listed on New York Stock Exchange, but for your average gal, Avon stood for affordable glamor, in-home shopping, and a little extra income for Mom.

By 1992, Avon stepped out with a women’s health care initiative to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. Seventeen years later, the company still sells lovely cosmetics, but also raises funds and awareness through the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade and Speak Out Against Domestic Violence, chaired by actress Reese Witherspoon.

October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will soon be here, and Avon is ready with several items for $15 and less, each of which gives back a percent of the proceeds to their Breast Cancer Crusade. Each watch, which costs $15, returns $2.00 to the cause. Each product comes with a free Breast Health or Domestic Violence Resource Guide. According to their website, "Through 2008, the Avon Crusade raised more than $585 million worldwide to advance access to quality care for all, regardless of ability to pay or insurance status, and for research into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of breast cancer." Avon Foundation says, "Make Us Obsolete" - so that domestic violence will end, and breast cancer will become a thing of the past. Watch out breast cancer - it's time to send that message out again.
